1. LEGENDARY CROSSOVERS
Mesal Gear Solid: Snake Escape
Kojima Productions and Japan Studio collaborated to create minigames for each other's titles. MGS3 featured "Snake vs. Monkey", where Solid Snake captures Pipo Monkeys in the jungle. In response, Ape Escape 3 featured Mesal Gear Solid, starring "Pipo Snake" equipped with a Banana Gun, Codec communications, and stealth mechanics.
Fun Fact: In the Japanese version, Pipo Snake was voiced by Akio Otsuka, Solid Snake's official Japanese voice actor. During Codec calls, Colonel Campbell and Mei Ling wear visor-style Pipo Monkey helmets!
Spike & Specter in PS All-Stars
Spike appears as a fully playable fighter, using his iconic Stun Club, Water Net, and RC Car to attack opponents. Meanwhile, Specter commands a giant Pipo Monkey Mech in the background of the crossover stage "Time Station", which transitions into Bioshock Infinite's Columbia.
Fun Fact: Spike's Level 3 Super Special Attack unleashes a stampede of Pipo Monkeys across the entire screen, capturing all opposing players in giant nets for an instant KO.
Astro's Playroom & Astro Bot (PS5)
Team ASOBI included prominent Ape Escape tributes in both titles. In Astro Bot, players can rescue Spike, Specter, and multiple Pipo Monkeys as VIP Bots. There is also an entire special level dedicated to Ape Escape mechanics where Astro uses the Time Net and Monkey Radar.
Fun Fact: Hitting a Pipo Bot in Astro Bot makes its Peak Point Helmet flash bright red while it executes its classic panicked running animation from the original PS1 game!
2. GUEST APPEARANCES & CAMEOS
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Insomniac Games included a hidden homage to the series inside Going Commando. Players can find a full 3D statue model of a Pipo Monkey preserved inside the secret Insomniac Museum level.
Fun Fact: The monkey statue retains its red Peak Point Helmet and white pants, making it one of the earliest third-party Easter eggs in Insomniac's history.
Monster Rancher 4: Playable Pipo Monkey
Koei Tecmo (Tecmo) collaborated with Sony to include an official guest monster in Monster Rancher 4. By inserting any original Ape Escape game disc into the PS2, players can unlock and raise a fully playable Pipo Monkey on their ranch!
Fun Fact: The Pipo Monkey monster in Monster Rancher 4 can be trained, leveled up, and entered into arena tournaments, utilizing signature playful physical attacks and light-up helmet animations!
LittleBigPlanet Franchise
Media Molecule released an official Ape Escape Costume Pack for Sackboy, allowing players to dress up as Spike or a Pipo Monkey complete with custom sound effects and helmet lights.
Fun Fact: The Pipo Monkey helmet in LBP responds dynamically to Sackboy's emotional state, changing light patterns based on expressions.
3. DEVELOPMENT SECRETS & WILD FUN FACTS
- Strict DualShock Requirement: The original Ape Escape (1999) was the very first game in PlayStation history that strictly required the DualShock Analog Controller. It could not be played with the standard digital controller at all.
- Siren Sound Origin: The word "Pipo" is taken directly from the Japanese sound effect for sirens ("pipo-pipo"), referring to the flashing siren light mounted on top of Peak Point Helmets.
- Piposaru 2001 (The Vacuum Game): In the Japan-exclusive PS2 spin-off Piposaru 2001, players control Spike with a high-powered vacuum cleaner to suck off the pants of Pipo Monkeys to wash them!
- Unique Names & Diaries: Every single Pipo Monkey across the trilogy has an individual name, custom stats, distinct pants color, and unique diary entry stored inside the Monkey Book.
- Movie Transformations: Ape Escape 3 allowed players to transform into cinema-themed battle forms, including a Western Gunslinger, a Dragon Kung-Fu Fighter, and a Magical Girl.
